Instrumental and Vocal Tuition Information and Policies

Multiple studies have shown that learning a musical instrument is one of the most beneficial activities a child can do. While not only directly correlated to permanent positive cognitive changes in the brain, it teaches commitment and perseverance, while also being rewarding and fun.

Experienced Instrumental and Vocal Specialists provide lessons in:

  • Piano and Harp
  • Orchestral Percussion and Drum Kit
  • Brass (Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Euphonium and Tuba)
  • Woodwind (Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Saxophone and Bassoon)
  • Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass)
  • Guitar (Acoustic, Electric and Bass)
  • Voice (all voice types and styles)
  • Music Theory

Instrumental and Vocal Tuition Fees 2023

Private Lessons

$4000per half hour lesson.

Group Lessons

$2750per half hour lesson. Not available for Piano or Drumkit.

Lessons at Genesis Music

Lessons are half an hour in duration. Longer lessons are recommended for students undertaking exams or auditions and can be discussed with the Instrumental Specialist. Lessons are scheduled and billed on a whole term basis which will vary according to the length of the school term.

Lessons occur during class time on a rotating schedule.

Lessons operate at a set time for the term so that students become accustomed to their regular weekly timeslot. Times are rotated for each new term.

Outside of class time lessons are limited and depend on Instrumental Specialist availability. Priority is given to Year 11 and 12 students and then given to students who are studying their second or third instruments.

Group lessons are available on all instruments except Piano. Teachers maintain discretion over group placings and will compose groups of students most suited to learn and advance together. Group lessons are not always possible, particularly for beginner students enrolling after Term 1. When enrolled for a group lesson, the student is committed to remain with that group for the entirety of the term. Students wishing to undertake exams must be enrolled in private lessons.

How to Pay for Lessons

Invoices will be issued once per term, at the beginning of term, by the Instrumental or Vocal Specialist. Payment must be received within 14 days from the date of issue.

Failure to pay by the due date may mean cessation on of lessons until payment is received or until parents have communicated directly with the teacher regarding an alternative payment plan. If a student misses one or more lessons due to the late payment of fees, the Instrumental Tutor is under no obligation to make up these lessons.

Missed Lesson Policy

24 hours notice is required where student absence is foreknown so that an alternative time may be arranged.

If a student is unable to attend their lesson due to sudden illness or unexpected absence, the tutor must be phoned directly by 7.00am or a makeup lesson will not be owed. (An email on the day is not considered acceptable notice, as teachers may be in lessons and/or rehearsals and unable to check email prior to scheduled lesson time.)

Lessons forgotten or missed with no prior notice will be forfeited.

Lessons missed due to staff absence will be made up or if not possible within the current term, credited on the next account.

Discontinuing Lessons

If you wish to cease tuition, please complete the online form below.

Once the Term has begun, students are considered to be enrolled for the entire Term. Mid-term cancellations are not accepted.

Multiple Lesson Policy

Students who learn multiple instruments through Genesis Music are strongly encouraged to have their second instrumental or vocal lesson outside of class time where possible, and must have their third lesson outside of class time. This may require consultation with Instrumental Specialists and class teachers. Please contact Genesis Music if you are considering enrolling in second or third instruments.

Instrument Hire Policy

A range of instruments are available for hire through Genesis Music. The intention of the Hire Scheme is to provide parents with a less expensive start to instrumental learning in the initial years.

Instruments are hired for the period of one year for $200. For all hire requests made known prior to the start of Term 1, the hire fee will be issued by the Genesis Finance Department on the school fee statement. If instrument hire is initiated later in the year, a separate hire statement will be issued.

Due to servicing and cleaning costs, instruments loaned or returned part way through the year will still be charged the full hire fee.

Students in Years 7 to 12 are expected to own their own smaller to medium instruments such as Violin, Viola, Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet and Trombone. Please check with the Genesis Music Staff about the availability of hiring larger instruments prior to enrolling for lessons.

A consultation with the instrumental teacher is recommended before purchasing an instrument. Please ask their expert advice on brands and models. Students who hire College-owned instruments are required to play in a relevant College ensemble for the duration of the yearly hire period.

Ensembles and Lessons

Students who learn a band or orchestral instrument, or who study voice lessons, are encouraged to participate in one of the College’s ensembles or choirs when they have reached the required standard. All students performing in College instrumental ensembles are required to be enrolled in ongoing lessons.
